James Milner holds the record with 658, ahead of Gareth Barry and Ryan Giggs. The 20 players with the most Premier League games, and how they lasted so long.

Milner and Barry: the record changed hands
Gareth Barry held the record for years after passing Ryan Giggs in 2017, finishing on 653 when he left West Brom. James Milner caught him while at Brighton, and his 658 now stands as the record. The two have a lot in common. Both started at Aston Villa or played there in their early twenties, both moved to Manchester City and won the title there, and both could play almost anywhere across midfield and defence.
Milner’s record is also a story of an unusually early start. He made his Premier League debut for Leeds in 2002 at the age of 16, and a few weeks later became, for a time, the youngest scorer in the competition’s history. His Premier League career went on to span more than two decades, longer than most players’ entire professional careers. A player who started at 22 and played all 38 games of every season would be 39 before catching him.
Versatility is the common thread in this table. Milner played at full-back, in central midfield and on both wings. Players who can fill several positions stay in teams longer, and in squads for longer still.
Goalkeepers last
Two goalkeepers are in the top ten, David James (572) and Mark Schwarzer (514). Shay Given (451), Brad Friedel (450) and Petr Čech (443) are not far behind. Keepers usually peak later and play longer than outfield players, which is why so many of them appear in long-career lists like this one.
The midfielders and the defenders
There are only two strikers in the top 20: Emile Heskey, with 516 games for five clubs, and Jermain Defoe. Wayne Rooney is listed as a forward but spent much of his later career in midfield. Most of the rest are central midfielders and centre-backs, the positions where experience matters most and speed matters least.
Who is still climbing?
Among players still in the Premier League when these figures were taken, Jordan Henderson leads with 466, ahead of Danny Welbeck (405) and Jordan Pickford (369). James Tarkowski, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson were all in the 330s and 340s. Henderson is the only active player within one season of the top 20.
Why appearances make good questions
Appearance totals are hard to guess. Most fans would put Thierry Henry ahead of Phil Neville, and would be wrong by almost 250 games. That gap between reputation and longevity is the basis of Football Higher or Lower. In Football Pointless, long-serving squad players are the kind of answer that scores low, because hardly anyone else thinks of them.
Most appearances by position
| Position | Most appearances | |
|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | David James 572 | Mark Schwarzer 514, Shay Given 451 |
| Defender | Jamie Carragher 508 | Rio Ferdinand 504, Phil Neville 504 |
| Midfielder | James Milner 658 | Gareth Barry 653, Ryan Giggs 632 |
| Forward | Emile Heskey 516 | Jermain Defoe 496, Wayne Rooney 491 |
Positions here are each player’s main position as Transfermarkt lists it. A player like Phil Neville, who spent much of his Everton career in midfield, is counted as a defender because that is where he spent most of his career.
Each big club’s record holder
Every club has a player who has made more Premier League appearances for it than anyone else. For several of the big clubs it is one of the one-club men from the table above. For others the answer is more surprising.
| Club | Most PL appearances for the club |
|---|---|
| Manchester United | Ryan Giggs, 632 |
| Liverpool | Jamie Carragher, 508 |
| Chelsea | John Terry, 492 |
| West Ham United | Mark Noble, 414 |
| Everton | Séamus Coleman, 374 |
| Aston Villa | Gareth Barry, 365 |
| Tottenham Hotspur | Hugo Lloris, 361 |
| Newcastle United | Shay Given, 354 |
| Arsenal | Ray Parlour, 333 |
| Manchester City | David Silva, 309 |
Arsenal’s answer is the one that catches people out. Ray Parlour played 333 Premier League games for the club, more than Tony Adams, Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry or Dennis Bergkamp, because his Arsenal career covered nearly every season from 1992 to 2004. At Manchester City, David Silva’s ten seasons put him ahead of everyone from the club’s title-winning era.
Henderson’s case shows how hard the record is to chase. Even at 466, and playing regularly, he would need five more full seasons, playing every game, to reach Milner.
Sources and method
Appearances and goals are league matches only, from Transfermarkt’s season-by-season player records, as used by the games on this site. Figures were checked on 2 November 2026 against data collected on 24 October 2026, early in the 2026/27 season, so totals for players still active will have moved on since.
Players on the same number of appearances are listed in the order our data gives them.
